Wade Deckard

War Dogs is trying to be Social Network, American Hustle, The Big Short and Lord of War but fails on being what it should have been; a dark comedy biopic with a few laughs. It tries to be informative, biographical, dark and funny but fails to reach a threshold in each of those categories leaving you feeling like everything is just off. Todd Phillip’s films continue to become more and more like his persona (telling jokes with the most serious face) and I’m not sure if that is a good thing. It usually leaves me feeling awkward more than anything else. If you want to watch a film that you think will be great but its just good, this one is for you.

War Dogs is a fun movie that will make you laugh and cringe but its falls short between the genres it is trying to be. There isn’t enough drama to make it a dark drama. There isn’t enough comedy to make it a dark comedy and there isn’t enough crime and biography to make it a good biographical crime film. Is it worth seeing in theaters? Probably not but you wont be disappointed if you do. It is easily the best movie out this weekend (08/19/2016) and you won’t be disappointed if you are a Todd Phillips fan. I think.
