Cute but not adorable. Funny but not hilarious. Good but not great. That pretty much sums up The Secret Life of Pets.  The marketing campaign has failed to present the film’s actual themes of jealousy, friendship and the relationship between owners and their pets. The campaign potentially deters viewers, like me,  into thinking that it’s just a bit film about “the secret life of pets.” Ironically, it also falls short on those themes and more importantly on that big emotional slap in the face that Pixar mastered 20 years ago with Toy Story, also known as “The Secret Life of Toys.”

If you are looking for a light film or something to take your kids too, I would recommend this film only if you haven’t seen Finding Dory yet.The exaggerated and romanticized version of New York is a lovely sight to see and something I am personally glad to have watched. Is Secret Life of Pets the best animated film of the year? No, but it is far from being the worst.
