Let the past die. Kill it, if you have to.” One of my favorite lines from Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi. It’s almost as if director Rian Johnson was speaking directly to the audience. I’ll show my hand right away and say not only is this the most fun Star Wars movie since Episode IV and V it’s also the most complete film too and it’s not close. The Last Jedi had everything I could possibly want in a new Star Wars movie and more. Filled with interesting character development and exciting plot twists, the film sincerely never felt predictable. Johnson, stays true to his vision throughout. Thoroughly funny, exciting, nostalgic and at times emotionally effective. The choreographed fight scenes were a fresh take on the genre, brilliantly filmed with practical and CGI effects. John Williams, composes yet again another beautifully woven score, teasing cues from the past while mixing in wonderfully new pieces for this next generation.

My only major complaints; a slightly overstuffed plot, the Leia scene (personally I don’t think it is as awful as many say) and at times the film can move quickly. Though I do think the editing for the final 40-minute climax is truly brilliant. It is about as sweeping and grandiose high-quality blockbuster filmmaking as we can possibly get. Forget your fan fiction, forget what you think your heroes should be. People are flawed, we don’t live our lives in black and white, we live our world within grays. Johnson breathes life into these young new characters, he takes them out of their one-dimensional creations from The Force Awakens and gives them actual depth. Walk in with an open mind and you might realize how important of a film this is to the Star Wars Saga. The Empire Strikes Back, Star Wars and The Last Jedi; those are my top 3 Star Wars films of all time.
