With Disney releasing Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, we finally have our first ever Star Wars anthology film. It is curious thing that with this opportunity to tell new stories in this universe we seem to have landed right back in the Skywalker lineage. You would think the filmmakers would seize this chance to give us new stories but alas, we are in the moments leading up to A New Hope. Strangely enough, this isn’t where I start lashing into the film due to its lack of originality. I actually believe the film is wildly original for being thrown into the same storyline we have known for 30+ years. The locations, creatures, robots and in all honesty, the vibe all strangely feel very fresh. The whole atmosphere of the film is thrilling and at times it feels like we might have walked into a war film. The action and visual effects are sincerely astounding. Hats off to the Director Gareth Edwards and the rest of the Disney team for being about to achieve this.

However, all this new shine and fun can’t hide a couple glaring issues. I honestly couldn’t find myself really caring about most of these characters. The character that I felt most connected to wasn’t even human, it was a robot. The performances are all fine, the fault really lies within the character development, most of these characters end up being flat and others with weak arcs. Thankfully the dialogue at times can be sharp or general audiences might have felt the same issues I was having. At the end of the day, this is a fun exciting story about a Rogue team trying to inspire hope, something we can all get behind. It’s a film made for the fans who adore the original Star Wars and, in many ways, it does succeed. If it just gave me some characters I cared for it could have been a genuinely special and impactful film.
